San Antonio is fortunate to have many outstanding organizations that provide
support and service to the homeless. The goal of Haven for Hope is to
bring those services together in a central location and coordinate their efforts
to better meet the needs of the homeless.
The need for this "one-stop" concept became clear as Haven for Hope planners
researched homeless issues and visited homeless facilities throughout the
country. While San Antonio and other communities have great services to
help the homeless, having those services spread across the city lessens homeless
individuals' ability to effectively utilize them. Most of the homeless
lack basic transportation, and many cannot even afford public transportation, so
getting to and from these locations is typically problematic. And, because
obtaining one service is often necessary to obtain others (such as obtaining
proper identification to take advantage of job placement opportunities), there
is inefficiency, so the homeless are less likely to take advantage of all the
services that are available to them. Having all of the services that they need
in one place will make the services more efficient and effective, and will truly
help the homeless transform their lives.
